This statement marks the first public reaction from Netanyahu’s office following a violent weekend in Gaza. According to the Health Ministry, Israeli attacks resulted in at least 19 casualties on Sunday. The Israeli military claimed that the strikes were directed at Hamas militants and key infrastructure.

The tensions between Trump and Netanyahu, amid the latter’s challenging re-election campaign, continue to escalate. The leaders met last week, prior to the announcement of the disarmament agreement. Spielman emphasized the necessity of Hamas’s tangible disarmament as a prerequisite for any durable agreement. He clarified that Israel demands a complete and verifiable surrender of weapons by Hamas.

Hamas has countered by stating their disarmament is contingent on Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and the cessation of aggressive actions. Spielman quoted Israeli intelligence, indicating that Hamas has been restocking, recruiting, and rebuilding military capabilities during the ceasefire, preparing for potential attacks reminiscent of those on October 7, 2023.

U.S. and Regional Reactions

The White House has yet to address the concerns raised by Israel. Trump claimed to have reached an understanding with Israel, suggesting that they were pleased with the disarmament deal. However, regional analysts express doubt that the agreement will bring immediate change to Gaza, with significant barriers persisting as both parties remain tentative in endorsing the deal officially.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli actions have persisted. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 19 people were killed and 35 injured in Gaza over the last 24 hours. The casualty count from the weekend reaches a minimum of 26.
