With a potential Major League Baseball lockout on the horizon, the Los Angeles Dodgers might have found themselves with extra motivation to acquire Tarik Skubal, the game’s most talented pending free agent. Skubal, a standout player and two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner, became available just before the August 3 trade deadline. By acquiring him from the Detroit Tigers, who are sitting at a 54-58 record, the Dodgers aim for a third consecutive World Series title.
To secure Skubal, the Dodgers exchanged prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith with Detroit for a limited two-month contract. Despite this acquisition, Skubal is unlikely to negotiate a contract extension during the season due to his agent Scott Boras, who typically prefers free agency for his clients.
“Skubal being on the Dodgers roster right now gives him an opportunity to sign an extension before the end of the season…thus, potentially grandfathering his new contract into any future CBA,” wrote retired MLB pitcher Ziegler on Twitter/X.
He highlights that if Skubal were on a different team’s roster, any future contract might have to adhere to the rules of a new collective bargaining agreement. Ziegler advocates for teams to have outbid the Dodgers for Skubal, arguing that winning should be prioritized now, even if only for the remainder of the season and playoffs.
Despite Ziegler’s call, teams like the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays, who possess the necessary prospect capital, did not secure Skubal despite having no World Series history. A columnist of the Los Angeles Times shared similar sentiments, regretting the Brewers’ missed opportunity.
While Skubal’s acquisition strengthens the Dodgers’ position for the 2026 World Series, the league’s future remains uncertain with possible changes in the next collective bargaining agreement, set to differ from the expiring one on December 1.
