A gathering of critics and supporters concerning Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham’s views on transgender inclusion in women’s sports took place at Target Center as the Fever played against the Lynx in Minnesota.
The Lynx triumphed with a 108-100 victory, under the guidance of coach Cheryl Reeve, who wore a shirt bearing the message, “Trans kids belong.” Spectators in the stands donned T-shirts stating, “Trans kids belong in sports.”
This marks the third consecutive Fever game attracting a rally following Cunningham’s remarks in an ESPN article advocating for restrictions on transgender individuals in female sports.
Cunningham and Reeve engaged in a midcourt discussion prior to the game. Reeve preferred not to disclose the specifics of their dialogue but commented, “We both understand we have platforms and wanted to educate more than anything. We have commonalities and differences on various issues. It’s about how you manage these matters. Meeting in person was appreciated.”
Cunningham faced jeers from the audience each time she possessed the ball.
Outside the venue, numerous supporters congregated by the entrance. A speaker persistently echoed, “Protect trans women,” while signs proclaimed messages such as “Love is truth” and expressed gratitude toward Cunningham.
Caitlin Clark shared her thoughts post-game, noting, “We’re focused on basketball. It is up to leagues and governing bodies to collaborate with athletes for solutions. Our aim is winning, which we missed tonight, pointing to areas needing improvement.”
Addressing potential distraction concerns, Cunningham emphasized her love for basketball and inspiring the next generation, remaining unfazed by protests against transgender involvement in female sports. “I’m full of love, bubbly, and focused on positivity,” Cunningham remarked, dismissing such concerns.
