US State Department Increases Travel Advisory for Ceuta Amid Migrant Surge

The U.S. State Department has upgraded its Travel Advisory to Level 3 for Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta. This decision follows a surge of migrants from Morocco which necessitated a significant security reaction. The advisory cautions about the potential for unpredictable and dangerous security situations due to the influx.

The advisory states that Spain has mobilized its military, National Police, and Guardia Civil to address the situation. It recommends Americans reconsider traveling to Ceuta because of safety concerns. This advisory is specific to Ceuta, an autonomous city on Africa’s northern coast. Other parts of Spain remain under their existing travel advisories.

Tens of thousands of migrants recently entered Ceuta, prompted by a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling. Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas reported around 60,000 migrants arriving within a 24-hour period. Spain’s Interior Ministry later estimated approximately 50,000 arrivals since mid-week, with many having since returned to Morocco.

In response, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced increased security forces in Ceuta and a new sea barrier to assist repatriations. He added that Spain is working with Moroccan authorities to address human trafficking networks behind the surge.

The situation elicited comments from President Donald Trump, who, during a cabinet meeting at Camp David, described it as a ‘catastrophe’ and warned of similar scenarios potentially unfolding in the U.S. He attributed the migrant rush to human traffickers misinterpreting the court’s decision.

Ceuta and Melilla, both on Africa’s mainland yet part of Spain and the EU, serve as key entry points for illegal migration into Europe. This has made them focal points of ongoing immigration challenges.
