Cinerama Dome’s Revival: A Hollywood Landmark’s Reopening

3 days ago 0

The Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles is making a comeback. This iconic theater, closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will reopen in 2028 thanks to a partnership between Sony Pictures and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Sony will lease and restore the theater, while Alamo Drafthouse will manage it along with 14 other screens in the adjacent multiplex.

The Comeback of a Hollywood Icon

Tom Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, expressed enthusiasm for bringing the Dome back. He emphasized Sony’s commitment to moviegoing and the unique value the Dome represents. The theater’s revival symbolizes the return of cinematic experiences, according to Michael O’Leary, head of Cinema United, and Escott Norton from the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation.

“There’s a lot of passion behind this theater,” said O’Leary. Norton agreed, acknowledging the anticipation surrounding its reopening.

A Legendary Venue with Rich History

The Cinerama Dome was built in 1963 by William Forman, founder of Pacific Theaters. It showcased Cinerama, a format to attract viewers back to cinemas. Constructed in just 16 weeks, it premiered with It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, starring comedy legends of the time. This film played continuously at the Dome for two years.

“It was a real happening,” recalled Karen Sharpe, widow of the movie’s director Stanley Kramer.

Over time, the theater became a hotspot for cinephiles. It celebrated premieres with elaborate decorations, including a giant Godzilla and a Shrek-inspired facade. Quentin Tarantino, a fan and previous user of the theater, even included it in his film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Community Efforts to Save the Dome

Amidst financial struggles, many worked to save the theater. Notably, filmmaker Benjamin Steinberg led a campaign with rallies and an online petition garnering over 30,000 signatures. He even projected images on the Dome to attract attention to its closure.

“The Cinerama Dome is the most famous movie theater in the world,” Steinberg stated during his campaign.

Steinberg’s actions stirred a public response, contributing to the movement to revitalize the venue, despite initial tension with the owners.

As the restoration progresses, Sony promises to honor the Dome’s historic significance while securing its future impact on Hollywood’s cinematic landscape.
