Inside the FBI’s Unprecedented World Cup Security Operation

The 2026 FIFA World Cup required a massive security operation in the United States, marking the first time the country hosted the final in over three decades. FBI Director Kash Patel shared insights with Fox News Digital on how the agency mobilized to safeguard the event. The scale of the operation was compared to managing 78 Super Bowls over 38 days.

The FBI invested considerable resources, deploying nearly 5,000 personnel, including over 4,000 from field offices, 800 from headquarters, and support from Legal Attaché offices. Coordination with 59 Homeland Security Task Forces was essential. More than 300,000 background checks were conducted on players, coaches, and staff across the tournament. Despite the large crowds, with around 7 million fans attending across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, no major security incidents were reported, and entry into stadia was efficient.

Addressing Drone Threats

A significant challenge was managing the risk posed by drones. The FBI’s proactive response included intercepting over 700 unauthorized drones, viewing each as a potential threat. These measures were necessary to protect players, secure team base camps, and ensure spectator safety.

The FBI established a counter-UAS (unmanned aircraft system) school at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. State and local officers trained to detect, track, and intercept drones were deployed to support the ground teams at World Cup venues. This led to a robust national capability to counter drone threats, a necessity given the advances in drone technology since the last U.S. World Cup in 1994.

Pre-empting Threats

The FBI’s vigilance was tested when investigators uncovered a potential attack on a parallel event, conceiving plans to use explosive-laden drones during the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House. A rapid, six-state operation thwarted the alleged plot, enabling the safe continuation of the event. Eight suspects have been charged, though they remain presumed innocent.

International Cooperation

The FBI’s strategy involved setting up the International Police Cooperation Center in Northern Virginia. This hub facilitated collaboration with U.S. city officers and international security partners. A Joint Operations Center engaged foreign police representatives from most participating nations, supplemented by the FBI’s Intelligence Coordination Center.

Over 400 personnel managed an average of 26 incidents daily and produced nearly 100 intelligence reports, enhancing security operations. The FBI praised the White House Task Force, initiated by President Donald Trump and led by Andrew Giuliani, for uniting federal, state, and local efforts under one strategy.

Apart from securing the tournament, the World Cup generated significant economic activity, with millions of visitors indulging in American culture and cuisine, contributing billions to the economy. International fans taking to local favorites like ranch dressing became a talk of the tournament.
