Restricting Eating Windows May Boost Brain Health

Consuming all meals within an eight-to-nine-hour timeframe each day could enhance brain health according to recent findings presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in National Harbor, Maryland. Researchers discovered that participants adhering to a limited eating window experienced improvements in cognitive functions after six months, despite similar weight loss compared to those on a regular eating schedule.

Sue Shapses, a professor at Rutgers University and principal investigator of the study, stated that meal timing contributed to the improvements as the study was a randomized controlled trial. Both groups achieved an average weight loss of about 8 percent, but only those with restricted eating windows showed greater cognitive gains.

“We are certain this is due to meal timing because both groups lost weight. However, the cognitive benefits appeared only in the group restricting their eating to eight hours,” Shapses explained to Newsweek.

The research, however, focused solely on women with overweight or obesity actively losing weight. Shapses noted the lack of evidence regarding leaner women or men.

The rising prevalence of Alzheimer’s and other dementia forms with aging populations highlights the significance of such findings. Prior studies linked diet and lifestyle to dementia risk, yet few investigated if these changes could reduce such risk.

The study involved 47 women aged 50 to 79, all overweight or obese, as part of a weight-loss program. Participants reduced daily intake by 500 calories. Twenty-six women were assigned to a time-restricted eating plan, consuming food within a nine-hour window, often from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., averaging about 8.2 hours. The rest followed a typical 12-hour eating schedule.

After six months, both groups lost around 15 pounds on average, negating weight loss as a differentiator. Cognitive performance varied, with those on eight or nine-hour schedules excelling in spatial planning and problem-solving compared to the 12-hour group. A trend towards fewer memory and learning mistakes was noted though it wasn’t statistically significant.

The study indicates potential improvements in everyday memory, attention, and problem-solving. Larger cognitive enhancements corresponded with increased reductions in eating periods.

Shapses emphasized that the method could suit those unable to adhere daily due to social or work commitments. “Occasional deviations are acceptable,” she remarked, citing participants occasionally diverging from the set schedule.

Despite promising results, the study’s small scale and preliminary nature necessitate further investigation. “We are continuing our analysis and will submit for peer review,” Shapses concluded.
