The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits experienced an increase last week, remaining within a historically low range as observed over the past few years. According to a report by the Labor Department, U.S. applications for jobless aid rose by 9,000, reaching a total of 197,000 in the week ending on July 25.
The preceding week’s figures, initially reported, were adjusted upward by 1,000, recording 188,000 applications, still marking the lowest level in more than five decades. Data firm FactSet had projected that new applications would total 207,000.
Weekly unemployment benefits filings serve as a reliable indicator of layoffs and provide insights into the current health of the U.S. job market. The four-week moving average, which helps to smooth out weekly fluctuations, decreased by 5,000, resulting in an average of 202,750.
Additionally, the overall number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the week ending July 18 stood at 1.78 million, representing a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week.
