Controversy Surrounds Sophie Cunningham at Seattle Game

The Indiana Fever’s recent victory over the Seattle Storm was marked by controversy due to a rally supporting Sophie Cunningham’s statements on transgender athletes. Neither Cunningham nor Caitlin Clark were available for postgame comments regarding the rally.

A crowd gathered outside Climate Pledge Arena to support Cunningham and advocate for initiatives IL26-638 and IL26-001. These initiatives call for barring transgender students from participating in girls’ athletics and expanding the state’s “Parents’ Bill of Rights.” Cunningham had recently expressed support for excluding transgender girls and women from female sports in an ESPN article.

Upon entering the game, Cunningham faced boos from Storm fans, especially during her first free throw attempts. Media members requested postgame comments from Cunningham and Clark, but they were instead addressed by Kelsey Mitchell, Monique Billings, and head coach Stephanie White.

In response to inquiries about the rally and Cunningham’s comments, a Fever public relations representative issued a statement clarifying the team’s position. The representative stated, “Neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers. Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united in that mission.”

Seattle Storm head coach Sonia Raman also addressed the situation, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to inclusivity. “Seattle and this organization and Climate Pledge, we always want to be an area where people feel welcome coming into this building,” Raman stated. “Our organization worked closely with Climate Pledge and the security to ensure that everyone feels safe and included.”

Heather Weiner, representing No Hate in Washington State, offered her perspective on the event. She said, “Washington State is a very caring, inclusive place. We don’t always agree, but we do agree against hate, and we will come together about that.”
