Falcons Face Early Quarterback Challenges at Training Camp

The NFL training camp has barely started, and the Atlanta Falcons are already battling quarterback injuries. Newly acquired Tua Tagovailoa, who joined the Falcons to compete for the starting quarterback role with Michael Penix Jr., is dealing with a flare-up of an injury. Head coach Kevin Stefanski informed reporters of Tagovailoa’s condition, though he did not specify the nature of the injury. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that Tagovailoa has a tight back.

Despite the setback, Stefanski expressed confidence that Tagovailoa will return to practice soon. Meanwhile, Penix Jr. is still in recovery from a torn ACL sustained last season, potentially sidelining him for the first four weeks of training camp. To address this, the Falcons signed veteran quarterback Cooper Rush to enhance their depth at the position.

The team released Trevor Siemian, leaving undrafted rookie Jack Strand as the only healthy quarterback on the roster after Tagovailoa’s injury. Although Penix participated in individual drills and 7-on-7 exercises, he has yet to join full team activities.

Penix, who has a history of injuries, told ESPN, “I have a long injury history. The last thing I want to do is rush back just to get back on the field. This is the third ACL. We’re not taking it lightly.” His cautious approach underscores the team’s need for a healthy roster moving forward.

Stefanski is well aware that injuries can arise unexpectedly, even at the early stages of training camp when full pads haven’t been used yet. The Falcons are a team to keep an eye on this season. The new leadership, which includes Matt Ryan as team president of football, aims to bring the Falcons back to playoff contention. The team hasn’t appeared in the playoffs since 2017, and they haven’t achieved a .500 record since that year when Ryan still played as quarterback.
