Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs Misses Training Camp Amid Contract Talks

The Detroit Lions began their training camp without one of their standout players. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was absent from the team’s opening practice on Wednesday.

Gibbs is eligible for a contract extension, which might explain his absence. Although he reported to the camp, he is not listed on the Physically Unable to Perform or Non-Football Injury list. This suggests a potential contract holdout.

Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed the team’s stance. “You guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys,” he said. “This will kind of continue. It’ll come as it comes. I think that’s the best way to say it. This is both sides working through something, and we’ll take it as it comes, but that’s where it is.”

Gibbs was drafted with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact on the Lions’ offense. In his rookie season, he rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 52 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown across 15 games.

His performance elevated in 2024. Gibbs recorded 1,412 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, along with 52 receptions for 517 yards and four touchdowns.

Last season marked the first time he started every game. He accumulated 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns while catching 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns over 17 games.

Gibbs’ stellar performance has earned him Pro Bowl selections in all three of his NFL seasons.

The contract discussions in Detroit mirror those with Atlanta Falcons’ standout running back Bijan Robinson, who also missed the first day of training camp due to contract issues.
