Willie Nelson Advocates Against Data Centers in Rural Areas

Willie Nelson, the renowned country music artist, has urged Americans to reconsider the expansion of data centers, particularly in rural regions. At 93, Nelson voiced his concerns via social media, addressing the environmental threats posed by such industrial developments.

Nelson reminisced about his hometown in Abbott, Texas, where he cherished the sight of stars at night, a view he fears will be obstructed by the light pollution and resource depletion from nearby data centers. He encouraged his followers to actively resist the incursion of these facilities to preserve local environments.

“I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night,” Nelson shared with his audience. “Now, like many other communities, we must fight against data centers invading our land.”

Highlighting the drawbacks of data centers, Nelson described them as noisy, water-depleting, and disruptors to the tranquility and sustainability of rural life. In his view, rural America’s strength comes from small-scale community operations and personal ties to the land, not industrial expansion.

Nelson stressed that preserving farmland is vital for growing shared food resources and sustaining family farmers’ livelihoods, arguing against the environmental harm caused by data centers.

“Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses,” Nelson remarked. “Let’s not allow our own demise or give up control over necessary resources in the U.S. and especially in Abbott.”

As a committed advocate for environmental causes, Nelson has raised over $90 million through his Farm Aid nonprofit, which he established in collaboration with John Mellencamp and Neil Young. Farm Aid was launched in 1985 to spotlight the struggles of family farms and to support farm families.

In response to the growing concerns, Texas Governor Greg Abbott backed Nelson’s sentiments by calling for a halt to data center growth in rural Texas. During a campaign stop, Abbott warned AI data center developers to bear their costs and minimize the burden on local resources.

“We must prohibit them from building AI data centers in rural Texas neighborhoods,” Abbott declared, emphasizing the need to remove tax benefits and enforce responsible resource use.

Nelson’s longstanding commitment to environmental issues continues to drive awareness and action. His efforts through Farm Aid and public outreach serve as a powerful voice in preserving the rural landscapes and communities that define much of America.
