Irish Singer-Songwriter Glen Hansard Dies in Motorcycle Accident

Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, known for his Academy Award-winning contribution to the film “Once,” passed away in a motorcycle accident outside Dublin on Wednesday. The musician, aged 56, was involved in a single-vehicle crash early in the morning, according to Irish police. Authorities confirmed a man in his 50s died at the scene but did not disclose his name.

Glen Hansard’s family and management expressed their shock and sorrow. His management, ATC, issued a statement shared with broadcaster RTE, emphasizing the family’s grief. Tributes poured in from fellow musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, who took to Instagram to express his heartbreak over losing “a great musician, a good friend and a generous and gracious man.”

Hansard carved his niche in both music and acting. He starred in “The Commitments” as a member of a soul band and received an Oscar in 2008 for the song “Falling Slowly,” written for “Once” with co-star Markéta Irglová. The movie, exploring the journey of two struggling musicians, later inspired a Broadway production featuring their music that won eight Tony Awards in 2012.

Beyond these accolades, Hansard fronted the rock band The Frames and formed The Swell Season with Irglová. His solo work, such as the album “Didn’t He Ramble,” earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 2016. Known for his deep involvement in the music world, Hansard was celebrated by Ireland’s President Catherine Connolly as “one of Ireland’s great singer-songwriters.”

Actor-comedian Chris O’Dowd commended Hansard’s ability to transform life’s difficult moments through his music. Hansard’s path began on Dublin’s streets as a busker. He later gained fame for leading the Christmas Eve busk outside Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre to support homelessness charities. His live performances and efforts in social causes were recognized by former Irish president Michael D. Higgins, who praised Hansard’s focus on societal issues.

In a notable performance, Hansard joined Lisa O’Neill at Shane MacGowan’s funeral in 2023 to perform “Fairytale Of New York,” bringing a dynamic energy to the event. Hansard leaves behind his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their young son, Christy.
