Panthers Linebacker’s Injury Leads to NFLPA Investigation

The Carolina Panthers faced a significant setback when linebacker Nic Scourton sustained a season-ending ACL injury on the first day of the team’s training camp. The incident occurred earlier this week and has raised questions about the conduct of the training session.

Nic Scourton, a 21-year-old former second-round draft pick, had an impressive rookie season. He recorded 47 tackles, 37 pressures, 26 hurries, five sacks, and a forced fumble according to Pro Football Focus.

The circumstances of Scourton’s injury have prompted an investigation by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). According to reports, the NFLPA is looking into whether the Panthers adhered to the no-live contact rules during the first five days of training camp.

“A team spokesperson said the Panthers are aware of an NFLPA inquiry. They are cooperating with the PA regarding Thursday’s practice, which saw Nic Scourton sustain an ACL injury,” said Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer.

Further details were confirmed by Joe Person from The Athletic, who shared that the NFLPA plans to review video footage from the practice. This review aims to determine if the team respected the guidelines restricting live contact during the acclimation period.

The collective bargaining agreement explicitly prohibits live contact for the first five days of training camp. During this period, players should engage only in running and conditioning exercises on the field.

Should the Panthers be found in breach of these guidelines, they might face penalties from the NFL. Potential consequences include fines for the coaching staff or team, the loss of future Organized Team Activity (OTA) sessions, and forfeiture of future draft picks.
