Honoring Ron Seman: A Lasting Legacy on the Dunes

Ron Seman, a beloved figure in Indiana Dunes, was fondly remembered on a Friday night hike. The weather was perfect, matching what Seman would have cherished. Around 25 hikers gathered to walk one of his favorite trails, numbers 9 and 10 at Indiana Dunes State Park, known for its stunning views of Lake Michigan.

A memorial hike took place in Chesterton on July 24, 2026, to honor Seman, who passed away at age 64. Seman’s passing left behind a legacy in the Indiana Dunes State and National Park trails. His widow, Susan Seman, despite her ailments, joined to honor her husband.

The hikers proceeded to the beach, where they formed a circle and reminisced about Seman as the sun set gloriously. Attendees shared stories of his regular Friday night hikes, starting at the State Park’s Nature Center, where Seman shared extensive knowledge of the local fauna and flora, occasionally spiced with “10% stories” for entertainment.

Tiffany Yorek, a regular on the trails, acknowledged the void left by Seman’s absence. She appreciated how he fostered connections and friendships during these hikes. Ryan Pagell, leading the memorial hike, emphasized Seman’s enduring presence in spirit.

Barry Tharp, a long-time hiking companion, reflected on meeting Seman eight years prior. Seman guided thousands on these trails, demonstrating an enthusiasm and depth of knowledge that left a lasting impression. He balanced a deep Christian faith with expertise in sound technology and computing while passionately supporting the monarch butterfly population in the region.

Seman challenged hikers with his “Monster Dune Challenge,” encompassing all 22 miles of trails. This challenge took place even in winter, proving to be a formidable task.

Ed Oziminski recounted his final hike with Seman facing the daunting heat, where relaxation in Lake Michigan provided respite. Hiker Marcella Bernat shared how Seman played a pivotal role in her life, urging her towards nature’s healing power following her loss. His encouragement and presence helped her navigate grief, illustrating his selflessness and compassion.

Connor Zelasko, preparing for a memorial circle on the beach, has initiated efforts to name a state park dune in Seman’s honor. With 900 signatures so far, he remains hopeful despite initial resistance. Zelasko, inspired by Seman, continues his legacy of leading recovery-based hikes, emphasizing reconnection with life and nature.
