Romania Downs Drone Amid Rising NATO Airspace Incursions

1 week ago 0

Romania downed a drone on Sunday, marking the third such incident in three days when NATO aircraft have neutralized uncrewed aerial vehicles. According to Romanian President Nicușor Dan, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet intercepted the drone at 10:13 a.m. local time near the southwestern border with Ukraine.

Bucharest has witnessed numerous drone incursions from Ukraine during Russian bombardments on Ukrainian ports near the Danube River, which separates Romanian and Ukrainian territories. Romania shares a land border of roughly 400 miles with Ukraine.

Drones entering NATO airspace have not yet been considered attacks on the alliance, so they have not sparked discussions about a collective response from all 32 member nations. However, the continuous incidents have prompted eastern European members of NATO to enhance their anti-drone defenses.

Romania’s defense ministry confirmed that the drone was shot down safely just over seven miles northeast of the port of Sulina, within Romanian territorial waters. While Romanian officials did not verify the drone’s origin, President Dan emphasized that it is intolerable for the Russian Federation to violate Romania, NATO, and EU airspace.

The previous day, Romanian authorities reported the interception of a drone in an uninhabited area near the Ukrainian border after radar systems detected it at 8:22 a.m. local time. This came a day after NATO’s command scrambled two Romanian F-16s and two Italian Eurofighter jets to intercept a drone approaching Romanian airspace. Later investigations revealed that the drone was Russian-made.

Debris from the drone and intercept missile fell near two towns northeast of Bucharest, with no casualties or injuries reported, according to Romania’s defense ministry.

The governor of Ukraine’s southwestern Odesa region, adjacent to Romania, issued air raid alerts along the border in the early hours of Sunday. Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry stated on Sunday that it attacked the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk, located southwest of Odesa, targeting fuel tanks used by Ukrainian forces.
