Christopher Atkins, known for his role in “The Blue Lagoon,” recently shared how his past drinking habits cost him the lead role in the film “Footloose,” which went to Kevin Bacon. This revelation came during his appearance at Fanboy Expo Knoxville in Tennessee, a gathering celebrating pop culture and nostalgia, as reported by People magazine.

Lost Opportunities

The 65-year-old actor recounted how filmmakers wanted to meet with him before finalizing the cast for the 1984 film. Unfortunately, he was unable to attend the meeting due to his excessive drinking. “I was partying too much,” Atkins said. “I went in, and I just blew that audition.” Despite having initially secured the role, his condition led the producers to decide against casting him.

Atkins expressed how his drinking impacted his career, drawing parallels with the experiences of Andrew McCarthy, another actor whose career suffered due to alcohol. Now, Atkins has been sober for nearly 40 years.

Film Debut and Rise to Fame

Atkins also shared insights into his early career and his breakout role in “The Blue Lagoon.” At 18, he starred alongside Brooke Shields. Despite having no acting experience and initially dreaming of becoming a baseball player, Atkins landed the role after numerous callbacks from auditions.

“I ended up modeling for the Ford Modeling Agency and auditioned for ‘The Blue Lagoon,'” Atkins stated. The experience changed his life as he quickly gained fame. “Suddenly, you’re on every magazine,” he reflected.

Controversy and Impact

“The Blue Lagoon” was controversial due to its depiction of teenage sexuality. With sensitive scenes involving the young actors, the film crew took care to use body doubles and other measures to maintain propriety. Atkins explained the atmosphere during filming, highlighting how the natural and isolated setting contributed to the film’s authenticity.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie became a box-office success, grossing over $58 million worldwide and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

Reflecting on Choices

Atkins reflected on his decision to prioritize family over a relentless pursuit of acting. “I wanted to be a dad more than chase the business,” he said. He emphasized how his focus shifted to providing for his family, which included teaching sailing to children in his youth and planning for future parenthood by saving money.

Now with a career spanning over 100 movies and television shows, Atkins feels accomplished. He expressed a desire to create his own film projects, marking a new chapter in his career pursuits.
