Maine Democrats Nominate Troy Jackson for Senate

BANGOR, Maine — Maine Democrats have selected Troy Jackson as their Senate nominee after Graham Platner withdrew following allegations of rape. The Maine Republican Party criticizes the nomination process as a ‘sham.’

The former state Senate president, Jackson, was chosen in a landslide at the Democratic nominating convention. He won the majority of delegates from Maine’s 16 counties.

Jackson’s rivals backed him after dropping out, leaving one minor candidate for consideration at the convention. He defeated Saundra Pelletier, winning 566-5 in Saturday’s vote.

The Senate race in Maine is crucial for both parties, as it could influence the balance in the Senate. Republican incumbent Susan Collins runs for re-election in a state Trump lost.

“Are you ready to defeat Susan Collins?” Jackson asked the convention delegates. He advocates for a massive working-class movement in Maine.

Jackson quickly raised over $1 million for his campaign and unified party support. However, reports of his alleged temper and workplace conduct have raised concerns about whether Maine Democrats have chosen an adequately vetted nominee.

A Democratic strategist noted the expedited vetting process and suggested Democrats must manage with their selection.

While some view Maine as a challenging state to flip the Senate, Democrats see opportunities in Texas, Iowa, and Alaska.

Platner left the race following scandalous allegations, prompting Democrats to seek a new nominee. Jackson, aligning with Platner’s progressive platform, believes he can lead the movement that backed Platner.

Among his proposals are taxing billionaires, implementing universal healthcare, and abolishing ICE. Jackson’s anti-military aid to Israel stance has split opinions among Democrats.

Jackson garnered support from Our Revolution, and Rep. Ro Khanna, a Platner supporter, quickly shifted his backing to Jackson.

Labor unions in Maine also strongly support Jackson, helping him secure delegates at the recent gathering.

The Republican National Committee claimed Democrats unfairly ensured Jackson’s selection through a rigged process.

Collins, running for a sixth Senate term, faces challenges due to Trump’s low approval ratings and economic concerns.

The Senator affirmed her stance on confirming Justice Brett Kavanaugh and defended ICE funding. Collins has historically overcome Democratic attempts to unseat her, winning re-election against Sara Gideon by nearly 9 points six years ago.

This year’s Senate race in Maine is anticipated to be competitive and costly, with significant spending from both parties.

Fox News rates the Maine showdown as a toss-up in its Power Rankings of the 2026 elections.

A recent poll by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center places Jackson ahead of Collins by a slight margin.
