Over 200,000 people fled regions in Western Europe due to rampant wildfires affecting Spain and France. In Madrid, the Spanish capital, thick ash covered rooftops, prompting residents to close windows against the irritating smoke. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez prioritized saving lives amidst the declared national emergency.
Sanchez highlighted that 130,000 hectares of forest have already burned this year in Spain, exceeding the last decade’s annual average of 100,000 hectares. More favorable weather provided a chance for firefighters to manage the blazes.
Conditions caused by recurring heatwaves exacerbated the fires in both Spain and France. Luis, an audiovisual technician, described emotional turmoil at evacuating his childhood home in Pelayos de la Presa. Global warming contributes to frequent and extreme weather emergencies, making Europe the fastest-warming continent.
In France, nearly 242,000 acres were consumed by fires. This marked a historic record, nearly ten times the size of Paris, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. About 167,000 people have evacuated in France. Extensive fires have persisted for days, straining hundreds of firefighters working tirelessly.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu called the fires unprecedented as the Gironde blaze has become self-generating. French President Emmanuel Macron mobilized 1,000 soldiers and an A400M military aircraft to aid firefighting efforts. This plane, newly equipped to release 20 tons of fire retardant, supports existing planes battling the flames.
Spain and France sought assistance from other nations, receiving firefighting aircraft from Italy, Greece, and Portugal. France expected additional support from Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Laurent Moretti, a French resident, expressed apprehension at the unprecedented scale of evacuations.
No deaths were reported in either country, although many firefighters suffered injuries. Temporary shelters were established, with evacuees such as Caroline Larrode, who found refuge in Bordeaux with her cats, concerned about returning home.
Last month, France experienced a significant rise in deaths due to a historic heatwave. Concurrently, Italy combated fires in Sicily and Calabria, allegedly initiated by arsonists using crude methods.
