Obama Surprises WNBA All-Stars with Inspirational Visit

Former President Barack Obama made an unexpected appearance at the WNBA All-Stars event on Friday, held at his Presidential Center in Chicago. Caitlin Clark, an Indiana Fever star, expressed her excitement, describing her encounter with Obama as an unforgettable moment. She recalled their conversation, where Obama commended her for managing the pressures that come with public attention. He shared insights from his experience, noting, “When I got famous in my 40s, I didn’t have to do it in my 20s.”

Obama addressed the players on the basketball court, which opened last month. “Some of you I’m meeting for the first time. All of you are extraordinary and I could not be bigger fans,” he stated. He praised the growth and recognition of the game, emphasizing its impact on basketball enthusiasts worldwide. After speaking, he posed for a group photo and spent about 10 minutes mingling with the players, including Clark, taking photos and shaking hands.

The former president highlighted A’ja Wilson during his talk. After the photo session, Obama engaged in a friendly exchange with New York Liberty star Jonquel Jones, briefly joining her in a defensive stance. Jones, who had met Obama before, remarked on his influence, saying, “He’s a role model for me.” She appreciated the opportunity to interact with someone who has significantly inspired and contributed to the community.

Obama explained that he no longer plays full-court games to protect his Achilles but participated in a casual game of “horse.” Known for being the first sitting U.S. President to attend a WNBA game in 2010, Obama has continuously supported women’s basketball, hosting championship teams at the White House during his tenure.

During the event, Obama received a No. 44 WNBA All-Star jersey, signed by the players. This occasion marked the first professional sports event to utilize the basketball court at the center, which opened in June. Although he was unable to attend the upcoming All-Star Game due to a prior commitment with Michelle Obama, his presence was celebrated by many.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert commented on the significance of the visit, noting the alignment of the league’s values with Obama’s legacy. “It’s fitting for our 30th anniversary that we’re here as the first sports league to play in the Obama Presidential Center,” she said. Following his interaction with the players, Obama also addressed a group of league investors and nearly 100 high school girls, further sharing his insights and encouragement.
