Emergency Landing and Fire: Kenmore Air Floatplane Incident

A Kenmore Air floatplane with 10 passengers and a pilot made an emergency landing off the Washington coast on Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard reported an emergency landing followed by the floatplane catching fire in North Beach Shallow Bay near Sucia Island.

All individuals on board were accounted for. Injuries were reported, ranging from head trauma to broken bones and lacerations, as per the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

Kenmore Air stated that four passengers were transported to local hospitals. One person is critically injured. The airline collaborates with investigators to provide updates as more information emerges.

Kenmore Air CEO David Gudgel emphasized focusing on the well-being of those involved. “We are grateful everyone aboard has been accounted for. Our immediate focus is ensuring our passengers and pilot receive the care and support they need,” Gudgel stated.

The de Havilland DHC-3 Otter aircraft was on a routine flight from Seattle’s Lake Union to Roche Harbor Marina on San Juan Island.

Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Navy, responded with boats and emergency personnel. Three air ambulance helicopters transported the injured passengers. Agencies involved included Orcas Island Fire & Rescue, Lopez Island Fire & Rescue, San Juan Island Fire & Rescue, and San Juan County Parks.
