Michael J. Fox has shared how going public with his Parkinson’s battle impacted him and his family. Speaking at the third annual Social Impact Summit, he explained why he chose transparency and the personal toll it took.
Family Impact
Fox, 65, revealed the strain his diagnosis placed on his wife, Tracy Pollan. He said, “It was hell on Tracy, it was really hard on her—and it still is, because it’s always changing.” He chose to be open about his diagnosis to help others lacking his advantages, stating, “I needed to normalize it and just be that all the time.” Fox was diagnosed in 1991 at 29 and made it public in 1998.
Advocacy and the Michael J. Fox Foundation
After retiring from acting to focus on advocacy in 2000, Fox founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The foundation has raised over $3 billion for Parkinson’s research, fostering progress worldwide. Co-founder Deborah W. Brooks highlighted the significant advances in the field and praised Fox’s courage.
“We’ve scaled significantly and activated scientists globally,” Brooks said. “Our goal is to bring aha moments to the drugstore shelf, and recent breakthroughs in early detection are promising.” She credits Fox’s openness with reducing stigma and empowering patients.
Fox’s Continued Influence
Fox’s decision to share his journey has inspired others. Brooks emphasized that his commitment isn’t about “just putting his name” on the foundation but actively working towards a cure. Fox resumed acting, taking roles in series like “Scrubs” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed that acting “really prolonged my life and made it interesting.” Recently, he was nominated for an Emmy for his role on Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” portraying a character with Parkinson’s.
