Samsung Expands Foldable Lineup with Three New Devices

2 weeks ago 0

For several years, Samsung’s foldable device range featured only the book-style Fold and the clamshell Flip. Today, at Galaxy Unpacked in London, the landscape has changed with a new addition, bringing the total to three distinctive foldables. This update allows users to find a suitable device that caters to their specific needs.

Each device in the lineup has a unique focus: the Galaxy Z Fold8 is ideal for media consumption, the Fold8 Ultra is designed for productivity and professional use, and the Flip8 emphasizes compact portability and individual style.

“Seven generations of foldables has taught us consumers need different experiences for different lifestyles,” said Annika Bizon, VP of Product and Marketing, Mobile Experience, Samsung UK & Ireland. “The Galaxy Z series is our most complete foldables line-up yet, setting a new standard with our most advanced AI features.”

Distinct Features of Each Device

The standard Fold8 is the lightest Galaxy Z Fold, weighing 201g. Its display ratios are adjusted for efficient content navigation. The 10:16 cover screen is ideal for quick social interactions and texts; when opened to the 4:3 main display, it provides a perfect space for gaming and videos. Rotating it makes it suitable for extensive reading. The device is powered by a 4,800mAh battery and features dual 50MP rear cameras, priced at £1,699 for the base 256GB model.

The Fold8 Ultra is a highly distinct option. It measures 4.1mm thin when unfolded and weighs 215g, holding the ‘Ultra’ badge for Samsung’s top tier. It boasts the widest 8.0-inch main display among Samsung foldables and a 200MP main camera sensor. Additional features include a 50MP ultra-wide camera, a 10MP 3x telephoto lens, a 5,000mAh battery, 45W dual-path charging, and the ability to record 8K video. The basic model is priced at £1,899, partly due to increased memory chip costs.

The Flip8 is on a different track. At 180g and 6.1mm when unfolded, it’s the slimmest and lightest Flip model. Powered by an Exynos 2600 chip, it features a redesigned FlexWindow – a 4.1-inch cover display with AI-native interfaces. This design provides personalized information and enables automations without needing to open the phone. With a 50MP main camera and Super Steady video capabilities, it starts at £1,149, aimed more at lifestyle integration than functionality expansion.

The Broader Market Strategy

The timing for these three devices aligns with market trends. According to Counterpoint Research, the foldable market is expected to grow by 21% by 2026. However, Samsung’s market share is projected to decrease to 32% as Apple launches its first foldable iPhone. Liz Lee from Counterpoint describes 2026 as a new phase for the foldable category, highlighting Apple’s impact on consumer awareness and premium benchmarks, while Samsung continues to benefit from experience and reach.

Counterpoint Research forecasts that book-style foldables will drive higher average selling prices, with high-priced devices representing a significant market portion. Samsung’s introduction of an Ultra tier and higher starting prices is a strategic move, appealing to luxury-minded customers.

All three devices are available for pre-order with general availability from August 7. Each includes a six-month Google AI Pro trial with 5TB of cloud storage. Samsung has also enhanced Smart Switch for seamless iOS migration via QR code, and Quick Share now interacts with AirDrop.

This new range of foldables will test whether three distinct models are more appealing to consumers than two. The Ultra offers a premium choice, the Fold8 needs to justify its position, and the Flip8 serves a different market segment altogether.
