Beluga Whales Relocate from Canada to U.S. Aquariums

Two beluga whales were relocated to a large saltwater pool in Texas, marking a successful international mission. The whales, named Bertie Bott and Frankie, traveled over 1,500 miles from Niagara Falls, Ontario, to SeaWorld San Antonio. Additional belugas were also moved to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

The transfer was the result of nearly two years of coordination efforts, with six out of the anticipated 28 whales now placed in U.S. aquariums. Steve Aible, vice president of zoological operations at SeaWorld San Antonio, expressed joy about their arrival. He was among ten caretakers accompanying the whales during the journey, which included rides on flat-bed trucks and a cargo flight. Onboard veterinarians ensured the animals’ health throughout the trip.

Marineland, the Canadian theme park from where the whales originated, closed to the public in 2024. Facing resource constraints, the park considered euthanizing the whales. To prevent such an outcome, relocation plans were pursued, and in July, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration approved the move for medical reasons, noting that suitable facilities in Canada were lacking.

In Texas, Bertie and Frankie are adapting well. They are engaging with their caretakers and maintaining a healthy appetite. Aible noted that they would enjoy a dynamic environment at SeaWorld, which is now fully operational, unlike the defunct Marineland.

The remaining whales from Marineland will be distributed to aquariums in Georgia, Chicago, San Diego, and Spain. Aible highlighted the opportunity to share the whales with countless visitors. SeaWorld San Antonio looks forward to introducing the new arrivals alongside their current beluga residents.
