Trump Endorses Darline Graham for U.S. Senate

President Donald Trump has endorsed Darline Graham to run for a full Senate term to fill the seat of her late brother, Lindsey Graham. Trump declared his support on social media, stating that she has been a lifelong winner and deserves his full endorsement if she chooses to run.

According to Trump, he discussed the potential campaign with Darline Graham at the White House. Sources familiar with the discussions revealed she had privately shown interest in the race. Trump’s endorsement significantly influences the ongoing efforts to fill the Senate position.

Several political figures are contemplating running for the seat, including Rep. Russell Fry, Rep. Nancy Mace, Rep. Ralph Norman, and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. The filing period for the special primary runs from July 21 to July 28, with the primary set for August 11.

Lindsey Graham’s funeral arrangements were also announced, with services scheduled in Washington on July 28 and South Carolina on July 29. Recently, Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to complete her brother’s term, which ends in January.

“It is such an honor,” Darline Graham remarked, addressing her appointment as South Carolina’s first female senator, surrounded by her brother’s staff and advisors, some visibly emotional.

Lindsey Graham passed away at 71 from a tear in his aorta. He never married or had children, but his bond with his sister was strong. After losing both parents when Darline was 13, Lindsey became her guardian and later adopted her.

Darline Graham, new to politics, was a constant in her brother’s career. By endorsing her, Trump might aim to secure another ally to advance his Senate agenda. Though they had a rocky relationship, Lindsey Graham was a close Trump confidant, akin to family according to the president.

Governor McMaster’s announcement didn’t indicate Darline Graham’s appointment as merely temporary. A source close to McMaster mentioned that the governor had not planned for her candidacy.

Sen. Tim Scott, a fellow South Carolina Republican, announced he wouldn’t endorse any primary candidate due to his role in the National Republican Senatorial Committee. However, he noted that as a voter, he might endorse someone personally, adding that Darline has made an impressive start.

Lindsey Graham had a sizable campaign fund, but Darline Graham won’t have direct access to these funds if she decides to run. Federal rules limit the transfer to her campaign to $2,000, although there’s no limit on transfers to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which can coordinate in support of her campaign.

According to Bradley A. Smith, a former FEC chairman, while direct funds cannot be earmarked for Darline’s campaign, the party can ensure she receives necessary financial backing.
