Academy Award-Winning Actress Brenda Fricker Passes Away at 81

Brenda Fricker, renowned for her Academy Award-winning performance as Bridget Fagan Brown in the film “My Left Foot,” has died at the age of 81. Her passing occurred on Thursday night in Dublin following a period of ill health, as confirmed by her agent, Phil Belfield.

Fricker made history in 1990 as the first Irish woman to secure an Academy Award. She earned the award for Best Supporting Actress due to her compelling portrayal of the determined mother of Christy Brown, a character with cerebral palsy who could control only his left foot. The film also saw Daniel Day-Lewis receive the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Christy Brown.

“We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” Belfield remarked. “I was honored to know, love and work with her, and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over.”

Fricker’s career spanned over 90 films and television shows from 1964 to 2024. She was recognized for her role in the 1992 movie “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” where she played a homeless woman who befriends Macaulay Culkin’s character in Central Park. She had also appeared in the original cast of the BBC medical drama “Casualty” and starred alongside Cate Blanchett in “Veronica Guerin,” a film about an Irish journalist murdered in 1996.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Brenda Fricker was awarded Dublin’s highest honor earlier in the year, receiving the Freedom of the City. Her autobiography, “She Died Young: A Life in Fragments,” published in September 2025, details her childhood experiences and challenges with sexual violence and mental health issues, leading to institutionalization multiple times. The book made the Irish Sunday Times bestseller list.

Simon Harris, Ireland’s deputy prime minister, expressed deep sadness over her passing:

“She truly was among the greatest exports this country has ever produced and an ambassador for Irish talent on the world stage. Quite simply, we will never see the like of her ever again.”
