The New Orleans Saints added a new player to their roster by signing former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year, $52 million contract during free agency in March. This move stirred speculation that veteran running back Alvin Kamara might depart the team. However, rumors of Kamara’s exit proved unfounded.
Alvin Kamara’s agent, Brad Cicala, confirmed a new deal for Kamara, stating that keeping Kamara with the Saints was always the goal for both parties. This contract ensures Kamara will likely retire as a Saint.
Kamara, now 30, is entering his 10th NFL season after being drafted by the Saints in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has become one of the league’s most versatile running backs, excelling in both rushing and receiving. Kamara holds the Saints’ records for career rushing yards with 7,250 and career rushing touchdowns with 61.
His 2025 season was his least productive due to ankle and knee injuries, sidelining him after 12 weeks. He recorded 471 yards and one touchdown on 131 carries over 11 games, marking career lows for him.
With Kamara’s productivity in question, Etienne Jr. will be expected to take on more responsibilities. Coach Kellen Moore is anticipated to find innovative strategies to utilize Kamara’s skills effectively. Kamara remains unfazed by these changes.
Kamara commented on the situation during the Saints’ OTAs, emphasizing past successful partnerships with other talented backs like Mark Ingram and Latavius Murray. He believes the presence of two capable backs complicates defensive preparations and predicts he and Etienne will complement each other well.
The Saints’ offense now showcases significant talent, including quarterback Tyler Shough, a finalist for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. The team also secured wide receiver Jordyn Tyson as the eighth overall pick in April’s draft, joining star receiver Chris Olave. With these additions, the Saints look poised to challenge for a playoff spot in the competitive NFC South, aiming for their first playoff appearance since 2020.
