Governor Abbott Addresses Fatal ICE Shooting of Mexican National in Houston

Governor Greg Abbott has publicly commented for the first time on the fatal shooting of a Mexican national by a federal immigration agent in Houston. Abbott, who has been a strong supporter of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, stated, “We don’t want to see people shot. Period.” Despite his support for these policies, Abbott emphasized that immigration laws can be enforced without resorting to shootings.

The incident involved Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was fatally shot by a federal agent in an ICE operation. Although not the intended target, his death has drawn widespread criticism. Abbott announced that the Texas Rangers will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

Abbott’s remarks follow a second incident in less than a week where Colombian immigrant Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero was shot by an ICE agent in Maine. These events have intensified calls for the Trump administration to address concerns about ICE officer conduct.

“We don’t want to see people shot. Period,” Abbott told reporters. “That’s separate from whether or not the immigration laws are going to be enforced. I fully expect our immigration laws to be enforced, but it’s proven that immigration laws can be enforced, and stopping illegal immigration from coming across our border can be achieved, without shooting people.”

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, encountered ICE agents while on his way to work in Houston on July 7. Video footage shows his van being pursued before agents followed on foot after a U-turn. According to DHS, Salgado Araujo attempted to evade arrest, leading to an officer firing in self-defense. The agents lacked body-worn cameras, leaving local businesses’ footage as evidence. Salgado Araujo, in the U.S. for 35 years, was not the intended target. His son Ronaldo Salgado expressed heartbreak over his father’s death, emphasizing his father’s dedication to building a home for the family and living the American dream.

Houston authorities and Abbott have pledged investigations, with the Texas Rangers conducting an independent inquiry. Abbott supports immigration enforcement but stresses the need for independent reviews of cases involving deadly force.

Abbott’s Stance on Immigration

Since 2021, Abbott has reinforced border security through Operation Lone Star and various measures aligning with Trump’s deportation agenda. Despite staying silent initially after the shooting, Abbott’s recent comments reflect growing concern over deadly force incidents, though he continues to advocate for strict immigration enforcement.

The Texas Rangers, along with Houston Police Department, will assist federal officials in their investigations. Details about agents involved remain undisclosed.
