Bangkok Music Bar Fire Tragedy and Aftermath

Burned musical instruments were discovered in front of the scene where a devastating fire occurred at a music bar in Bangkok, Thailand. The fire, which took place on Sunday night, July 13, 2026, resulted in the tragic loss of over 30 lives, including crucial members of the band performing at the time. Among the deceased were four members of the Totsakan band, whose story has been central in Thai media coverage.

Chanyanuch Pudmon, the sister of Preutthipong Pudmon, the band’s late keyboard player, expressed grace amidst the tragedy. ‘He would want people to remember him with a smile on stage, playing his favorite music,’ she shared as family members gathered at Bangkok’s Institute of Forensic Science for his body.

The blaze claimed at least 33 lives and left many injured, with 17 critical cases still hospitalized, according to Erawan emergency services. Most fatalities were due to smoke inhalation, with some victims also suffering burns, stated Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, the head of the forensic institute. The cause of the fire at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar and its severe consequences are under investigation. Authorities question whether flammable materials in the ceiling, locked exits, and the legality of the venue’s registration contributed to the tragedy.

The Totsakan band, known for its roots music, regularly performed on Sundays. The music appealed especially to rural audiences who enjoy traditional rhythms with modern instruments. Witnesses reported they first noticed sparks from a circuit breaker, possibly igniting the fire. The ensuing panic led patrons to scramble towards scarce and narrow exit routes in complete darkness. Following the chaos, identifying survivors and victims was challenging, even after fire control and hospital transfers. The band’s lead singer Atipat Wijan, known as ‘Ice’, faced heartbreak. Hours post-incident, he attempted to revive his girlfriend and female lead vocalist, Nahatai Sajjalert, nicknamed ‘Breeze’, with CPR, but she remained unrevived.

A misunderstanding initially led to the belief that keyboardist Preutthipong ‘Kwang’ had survived, but it later emerged he never exited the bar. Drummer ‘Biw’ Nattapat Thamnita was evacuated in critical condition but did not survive. By Wednesday, the band’s spokesperson announced the death of male singer Thitiwat Kaewkanha, known as ‘Din’, who succumbed to burns covering 80% of his body after being hospitalized.

Reports from other survivors and family members indicated frustration and grief as they gathered at a police station seeking compensation. Natthaphong Lakhorn, 26, recounted how he initially mistook the fire’s white smoke for stage effects. A friend and relative accompanying him perished in the chaos, but Natthaphong escaped through a back door. He disputes police claims by stating a security guard, flashlight in hand, guided them to safety, although fire alarms were not heard.

Kanticha Singkhon, 25, collected belongings of her deceased mother at the station, heartbroken and financially burdened. Now responsible for her younger brother, she hopes for proactive contact from bar owners to affected families seeking compensation.

A lawyer representing the bar indicated survivors and families will receive an initial compensation of 10,000 baht (about $300). ‘It’s insufficient for funeral costs,’ Kanticha remarked, sharing her struggles of resorting to loans for her mother’s funeral expenses in the absence of financial arrangements and official outreach.
