Pennsylvania Gubernatorial Race Tightens as Senator Fetterman’s Democratic Support Declines

A recent Quinnipiac University poll highlights key shifts in Pennsylvania’s political landscape. Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro’s lead has reduced in the gubernatorial race, while Senator John Fetterman’s approval among Democrats has reached a new low.

The poll surveyed 895 registered voters from July 9 to July 13, with a margin of error of ±4.3 percentage points. The poll indicates Shapiro’s lead against Republican candidate Stacy Garrity has decreased from an 18-point advantage earlier to 13 points. Among Pennsylvanians, 53% still plan to vote for Shapiro, while 40% favor Garrity.

Shapiro’s Reelection Campaign

Shapiro is up for reelection this year and faces a tighter race than anticipated. Despite the narrowing gap, Shapiro is still favored to win, with significant Democratic and independent support. Other polls, such as one from Franklin & Marshall College, show Shapiro with a 50% backing compared to Garrity’s 28%.

Shapiro’s approval stands firm at 56%, but disapproval has increased from 29% to 34%. Voter unfamiliarity with Garrity, who is the Pennsylvania treasurer, might benefit Shapiro, as 58% of respondents remain unaware of her.

Senator Fetterman’s Declining Democratic Approval

Senator Fetterman’s political stance has led to dissatisfaction among Democrats. Although Fetterman is not up for reelection until 2026, the poll suggests he might face a primary challenge in 2028. Only 19% of Democrats approve of his performance, whereas 69% disapprove.

While Fetterman maintains overall approval of 48% against 41% disapproval, he is notably supported by Republicans, with 77% favorability. Many Democrats, 57%, would prefer Fetterman leave the party. Despite moderate affiliations, Fetterman insists he aligns with Democratic principles, particularly on LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights.

Former Fundraising Efforts and Controversies

Fetterman faced criticism for his joint fundraising committee with Republican Senator Dave McCormick. This initiative drew ire from Democrats focused on Pennsylvania battleground races. Despite criticism, Fetterman defends the committee, emphasizing mutual interests in Pennsylvania representation.

Pennsylvania’s Political Dynamics

Pennsylvania’s role as a competitive battleground state is marked by shifting voter preferences. Historically Democratic from 1992 to 2012, the state witnessed Trump’s narrow victory in 2016. Although Biden reclaimed the state for Democrats in 2020, Trump again led in 2024.

Trump’s appeal among rural voters altered the political landscape. Democrats’ gains in Philadelphia suburbs are crucial for maintaining competitiveness. Shapiro and Fetterman’s election successes in 2022 underscore the state’s political variability.
