The U.S. military announced on Wednesday that it conducted strikes on Iranian cruise missile storage and launch sites located on Greater Tunb island in the Strait of Hormuz. This island, subject to a longstanding territorial dispute, plays a crucial role in Iran’s control over shipping routes through the Persian Gulf.

The U.S. missile attack on Greater Tunb highlights the ongoing territorial conflict between Iran and the United Arab Emirates. The island is part of a series of strategic locations used by Iran to monitor and control maritime activities in the region. These outposts are equipped with drones, anti-ship missiles, and fast-attack speedboats, enhancing Iran’s military capabilities in the strait.
“It has been over half a century since Iran seized control of Greater Tunb along with Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa from the UAE in 1971. Yet, the UAE continues to view the islands as occupied territories and claims a historical connection through the Qasimi tribe, rulers in the region since the 18th century.”
The UAE has pursued negotiations with Iran and sought intervention from the International Court of Justice but has not achieved any resolution. Iran maintains a presence on Greater Tunb, populated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Efforts to increase habitation on the islands have included initiatives launched by Iran in 2023, coupled with military exercises to strengthen its hold.
Wednesday’s airstrikes are part of a series of U.S. military actions targeting islands in the Persian Gulf amid ongoing tensions with Iran. President Trump, during the conflict, made threats to capture Kharg Island, Iran’s largest oil terminal, located around 400 miles from the Strait of Hormuz.
