Houston Prosecutor Ready to Pursue Charges in Fatal ICE Shooting

Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare has announced his office’s preparedness to prosecute federal immigration agents if evidence suggests criminal wrongdoing in the recent shooting of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. The incident, involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, is under investigation following allegations that Salgado weaponized his van during a traffic stop.

Teare emphasized the independence and transparency of the investigation, conducted by local authorities who have issued numerous subpoenas. He underscored the community’s right to have such an inquiry, stating, “You can’t come into our community, take someone’s life, and then hide behind a badge.”

While the Department of Homeland Security claimed an ICE agent fired in response to Salgado’s actions, the family disputes this narrative, describing Salgado as a devoted father with over three decades in the U.S. The incident follows another fatal shooting by an ICE officer in Maine, prompting further scrutiny.

The FBI is investigating the Houston case as a potential assault on a federal agent, with the DHS Office of Inspector General conducting a separate probe. Teare noted local authorities are considering charges including murder, criminally negligent homicide, and tampering with evidence.

A point of contention is ICE’s lack of cooperation. Teare highlighted the absence of basic information, such as the name of the agent who fired the weapon, calling it “strange,” especially given his experience in law enforcement.

Teare criticized ICE’s tactics as inconsistent with proper law enforcement procedures, suggesting either a lack of training or deliberate provocations to justify shootings.

Following these events, ICE has temporarily halted vehicle stops by deportation agents until further instructions are provided.

In support of the investigation, Teare’s office is facilitating U visas for occupants of the van to prevent their deportation, allowing them to assist as witnesses. These men, including Salgado’s brother, are currently facing deportation.

Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, advocates for their protection, stating, “Lorenzo Salgado Araujo deserves a full and independent investigation, impossible without eyewitness accounts.”
