GOP Urgently Seeks Lindsey Graham’s Replacement

As discussions continue, President Trump has hinted at his preference for a long-term replacement following Sen. Graham’s passing. With the special election approaching on August 11, private negotiations and public campaigning have started, particularly to secure Trump’s endorsement. Rep. Russell Fry is one such lawmaker eyeing the position, and Trump has shown favorable interest in him.

“I think Russell Fry, a young congressman, is outstanding, and that could happen. I could see that happening,” Trump mentioned in an interview with Newsmax. Trump previously supported Fry’s successful bid for Congress in 2022, where Fry defeated former Rep. Tom Rice, who had voted to impeach Trump after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.

On Fry, Trump added, “He took the place of somebody that was — I mean, he’s doing much better than the person that preceded him. He’s been very popular in the state, so I think a name like Russell Fry is somebody you can watch out for and there are probably some others.” Reports suggest Fry has been in communication with the White House regarding a potential run and is considered a top contender for Trump’s endorsement.

Meanwhile, Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Sen.-designate Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham’s sister, to fill his seat temporarily. Trump supports this interim placement, noting that she would serve until the election concludes.

Other potential candidates include Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, both of whom are also considering entering the race. Norman has even sought Trump’s endorsement. Both previously failed to secure the GOP nomination for South Carolina governor, a race won by Attorney General Alan Wilson, who defeated the Trump-endorsed Lt. Gov. Pam Evette.
