Ohio authorities have announced the resolution of a decades-old murder case by revisiting evidence initially found behind a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Georgia. John Warren, a traveling salesman for an auto parts company, was found deceased in his Holiday Inn room in Middletown, Ohio, on October 17, 1985, as stated by Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell. Middletown is approximately 35 miles east of Cincinnati.
Upon discovery of Warren’s body, his 1985 Oldsmobile and several personal items were missing. Within days, police located some of these missing belongings discarded behind a Cracker Barrel in Dalton, Georgia. Furthermore, his car surfaced in Redington Beach, Florida.
According to Fornshell, while detectives pursued various leads at the time, the evidence was insufficient to progress the case. The investigation stalled until its reopening in 2019, prompting the submission of items from all three crime scenes for laboratory analysis.
The analysis led to the identification of Randy McAllister from Columbus, Ohio, as a suspect. Additionally, a potential accomplice was identified, but they had already passed away. Prosecutor Fornshell stated that his office, in collaboration with sheriff’s detectives, continued the investigation, eventually presenting the evidence to a grand jury last month. This grand jury indicted McAllister on charges of murder and aggravated murder.
“‘Cold case’ investigations are ‘cold’ for a reason. Often, there is some evidence indicating a suspect, yet not enough to proceed. Leads diminish over time,” Fornshell explained. “However, over the past five years, the tenacious efforts of Warren County Sheriff’s Office detectives have brought the case to a point where we believed there was sufficient evidence to charge McAllister, and the grand jury concurred.”
The motive behind McAllister’s alleged actions has not been publicly disclosed. However, CBS affiliate WKRC reported that the indictment accuses McAllister of murdering Warren in the course of a robbery.
