Research suggests that elderly individuals who walk briskly may reduce their chances of cognitive decline. This finding adds to the array of strategies known to promote mental sharpness, which have traditionally included puzzles and brain games. A recent study highlights another important factor: maintaining a quick gait, especially in your 80s, can contribute to preserving cognitive health.

The Study of ‘Super Movers’

Dr. Sofiya Milman from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine describes ‘super movers’ as individuals over 80 who outperform their peers in walking speed. The study, which analyzed data from almost 4,000 older adults, identified the fastest 9% as super movers. These seniors exhibited a significantly lower risk of cognitive decline.

The most significant finding reveals that super movers have approximately a 50% lower likelihood of developing cognitive decline compared to their less nimble peers.

The findings were published in the journal Neurology.

The Role of Muscle Health

Muscle health is essential for walking, requiring balance, coordination, and strength. Bonnie Tsui, author of “On Muscle: The Stuff That Moves Us and Why It Matters,” notes that muscle health parallels cognitive health, particularly as people age. Exercise not only strengthens muscles but also has been shown to increase brain volume, particularly in the hippocampus.

Exercise prompts muscles to release signaling molecules that affect various body systems. One such protein, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), supports neuron survival and cognitive function.

Walking as a Health Marker

Dr. Amit Saini of Kaiser Permanente emphasizes that walking serves as a health indicator by engaging numerous body systems. Walking improves cardiovascular function and lung health as it boosts heart rate and breathing.

Interestingly, some super movers had brain plaques typically linked to Alzheimer’s but showed no symptoms, suggesting that staying active could enhance brain resilience.

Influence of Genetics and Lifestyle

Genetic factors play a role in becoming a super mover, with some studies suggesting genetics account for 50% of lifespan. However, lifestyle choices such as diet, sleep, stress management, and social interactions are equally crucial.

Close to half of dementia cases could potentially be prevented or postponed by modifying 14 risk factors. Tools like the Brain Care Score, developed by Massachusetts General Hospital, help assess personal risk and recommend lifestyle changes to mitigate risks.

Joe Verghese, a researcher involved in the study, stresses the importance of staying active. Regular exercise, whether walking, swimming, or cycling, can promote brain and body health, potentially making you a super mover. Consistency in physical activity supports both muscle and cognitive function for the long term.
