After Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 and rebranded it as X, Meta took the opportunity to launch its own social network called Threads. The app quickly surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT as the fastest to reach 100 million sign-ups.
Despite a shift in Silicon Valley towards artificial intelligence, Threads continued its growth. Recently, Meta announced that Threads has reached 500 million monthly users, matching the popularity of Musk’s X. This marks a significant milestone for the platform.
Threads has evolved to resemble platforms like Reddit and X. Users are increasingly engaging in specific communities for discussions on television episodes, game recaps, celebrity gossip, and current events. Popular topics include K-pop, the W.N.B.A., dating, dramedy books, and shows like “Heated Rivalry.”
Meta, known for Facebook and Instagram, has made Threads a conversational space where news and politics are discussed but aren’t the primary focus. Features such as dedicated community sections, badges for top posters, and customizable algorithms cater to user preferences.
Connor Hayes, head of Threads, emphasized that the platform’s growth follows the users’ intent. Threads aims to reach one billion users. If successful, Threads would surpass Snapchat’s 956 million users, as revealed in financial reports.
