Miguel Vargas: From Struggles to All-Star Success

Cleveland: Miguel Vargas faced challenges in 2024, saying, “It’s hard at the time; I was processing”. He longed for joy and his own identity on the field but struggled to find them. Fast forward to today, Vargas is an All-Star.

Now representing the Chicago White Sox in the All-Star Game on July 14 in Philadelphia, Vargas attributes his success to his teammates. “They carried me to this point, and I’m grateful to be part of this group,” he said.

Saturday evening brought the announcement of All-Star rosters. Vargas expressed his excitement, stating, “I put a lot of hard work in there, and it’s great to see some payoff. I’m glad to represent the team.”

Vargas marks the first Sox third baseman to make the All-Star team since Joe Crede in 2008, joining figures like Robin Ventura (1992) and Bill Melton (1971). The achievement is celebrated by manager Will Venable, who sees Vargas as an exemplary representative of the club.

Vargas’s performance entering Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians is notable. With a .248 batting average, .359 on-base percentage, and .495 slugging, he boasts 20 home runs and 55 RBIs over 86 games. His 3.2 fWAR ranks 18th in MLB and 13th among position players.

Reflecting on past challenges, Vargas noted a significant change. “It’s a long journey,” he said. In 2024, Vargas hit just .104 in 42 games after being traded from the Dodgers. Improvements followed, with a .234 average and 16 home runs last season.

This year, Vargas leads major-league third basemen in runs (58) and walks (51), excels in RBIs, sits second in home runs and OPS (.854), and ranks third in weighted runs created plus (138).

Venable lauded Vargas’s offseason dedication to improving both his body and swing, highlighting sustained high-level performance. “We saw exciting stretches in 2025,” Venable said.

Despite Vargas’s individual success, Venable voiced disappointment over the absence of more Sox players on the AL roster. “I think we have so many good candidates,” he said, hopeful for additional players potentially joining as replacements.

Praised for his unique characteristics, Vargas remains integral to the team. “He’s got this special easy way, yet he’s competitive,” Venable noted.

Sharing the honor of an All-Star selection, Vargas expressed gratitude towards teammates, management, and fans. “This is a great moment for my family, and I want to share it with them,” Vargas said.
