A group of celebrities and activists marked America’s 250th anniversary with a video campaign urging opposition to President Donald Trump’s administration. The video, which premiered on Variety, showcased stars like Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ted Danson, and Judd Apatow.
In the video, lasting nearly ten minutes, the celebrities recited rules from the book “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century” by Timothy Snyder. Snyder warned that the upcoming midterm elections represent a significant turning point for America, suggesting that voters’ decisions could lead the country in a positive or negative direction.
Snyder stated, “Today, the Republic is 250 years old.” He expressed concern about the nation’s direction come November, noting a crucial turning point in America’s history. The video featured readings from Snyder’s book, with celebrities reciting lines such as “Do not obey in advance” and “Beware of the one-party state.” Featured readers included Leslie Odom Jr., Sheryl Lee Ralph, Holland Taylor, Isabel Allende, and Lisa Rinna.
Mark Ruffalo, known for his role in Marvel’s “Avengers” films, participated in the video due to his opposition to the Trump administration. Ruffalo emphasized his desire for a government that focuses on the needs and aspirations of young people rather than catering to the wealthy and powerful. He also advocates for closing the wealth gap, respecting the planet, and moving away from colonial ways.
Snyder shared his video on X with remarks on the meaning of rebellion, encouraging the creation of a better America from a flawed world. He used the 250th anniversary as a reminder to aim for positive change. He criticized current 250th celebrations, viewing them as a threat to liberty, listing issues like unchecked wealth accumulation and government corruption.
The video featured input from numerous participants, such as Isabel Allende, Judd Apatow, Margaret Atwood, Joan Baez, Sophia Bush, Misha Collins, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and others. Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment, but no immediate response was provided.
