White Sox Suffer Another Walk-Off Loss to Guardians

CLEVELAND — In a dramatic Friday night game, the Chicago White Sox saw their lead slip away in a 4-3 loss to the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. A crowd of 33,646 watched as the game extended into extra innings.

Miguel Vargas, third baseman for the White Sox, showcased perseverance during a 10-pitch at-bat, capping it with a three-run homer in the fifth inning. This gave the White Sox a brief advantage before a lengthy 1-hour, 55-minute rain delay halted play.

“Just looking for a strike,” Vargas stated. “Just trying to drive the runner home and I got lucky on a good pitch.”

When the game resumed, both teams relied heavily on their bullpens. White Sox starter Anthony Kay, who allowed just one run and one hit over four innings, did not return post-delay. Kay expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the tarp pull, suggesting tactics were at play.

“I was hoping to go six, seven, eight innings, give the bullpen some help,” Kay commented. “But the second that Vargas hit that home run they pulled the tarp.”

“I don’t even think he was finished rounding the bases when they pulled the tarp out,” he added.

As the game intensified, reliever Seranthony Domínguez struggled in the seventh inning with two walks. Despite his efforts, the Guardians capitalized on their opportunities. In the same inning, an error by shortstop Colson Montgomery allowed the Guardians to cut the lead to 3-2, and Steven Kwan’s single tied the game.

The Guardian’s center fielder, Kahlil Watson, clinched the game with a walk-off single in the 10th inning. This marked the second consecutive day the Sox experienced a walk-off defeat, having succumbed the day prior to a ninth-inning homer by Rocchio.

“It’s not the way we want to come here and start the series,” said Vargas. “We’ve been doing that a lot during the year. Being on this side now really sucks, but we are playing really good baseball and that’s all we can ask for.”

The loss pushed the White Sox to 45-42, trailing the Guardians, who advanced to 47-42, by one game in the American League Central.

Despite the setback, Sox manager Will Venable remained focused on the team’s overall performance.

“It’s tough to score against them, it’s tough to keep them from scoring,” Venable acknowledged. “There’s a lot of little plays here and there that really made a difference.”

Both teams continue the series with the White Sox striving to rebound and reclaim their standing in the division.
