Two Chicago police officers were shot on Friday evening in the South Shore neighborhood. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. at the intersection of East 79th Street and South Chappel Avenue. Larry Merritt, spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, confirmed that both officers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. A civilian was also transported to the hospital. The current conditions of those involved have not been disclosed.
The exact details surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. However, a police source familiar with the situation mentioned that an exchange of gunfire took place following a traffic stop. According to the source, one officer sustained an injury to the vest, while the other was wounded in the arm.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has announced that it is conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting near 2000 East 79th Street.
