Switzerland Advances to Last 16 with Victory Over Algeria

Switzerland secured a spot in the last 16 of the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Algeria in Vancouver. Breel Embolo scored early, and Dan Ndoye added another goal after halftime, setting up a match against either Colombia or Ghana.

This victory marked Switzerland’s first knockout stage win since 1938. Coach Murat Yakin’s strategic approach was pivotal, as they adapted formations and expertly countered Algeria’s efforts. Both goals were perfectly timed, with the match focusing more on strategic depth than excitement.

Facing former Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic, Yakin’s strategy to absorb early pressure and counterattack proved effective. Breel Embolo emphasized the importance of clinical finishing, stating, “We couldn’t underestimate Algeria and we had to be clinical.”

Embolo’s goal came in the 10th minute after Johan Manzambi set him up perfectly. Post-goal, Switzerland employed a five-man midfield, effectively stifling Algeria’s efforts. Algeria’s best chance in the first half saw Ibrahim Maza miss the target.

Switzerland scored shortly after the break via Ndoye, following Algeria’s failed clearance. Although Riyad Mahrez nearly scored for Algeria, his attempt hit a defender, showcasing Algeria’s frustrations.

With Granit Xhaka redirecting Switzerland’s defense, they continued with rapid counters. Despite Fabian Rieder missing a clear opportunity, the outcome remained unchanged, with Switzerland celebrating their advance.

Ndoye, who excelled, reflected on his performance. He noted, “Before the World Cup, I hadn’t played for a long time, so I had to get back into the swing of things. I was really looking for that goal.” He focused on playing naturally, which proved successful.
