Representative Thomas Kean Jr., absent from Washington since March, returned to his New Jersey residence last Wednesday evening. Seen wearing a suit and tie, Kean appeared in the brightly lit front room of his Westfield home just before 8:45 p.m. He greeted a reporter from The New York Times who rang the doorbell, saying, “It’s good to see you,” and added, “I’ll talk to you next week.” He then thanked the reporter before closing the door. Rhonda Kean, his wife, stood in the background and greeted with a smile.
Aides mentioned Kean was undergoing treatment for a health condition, expecting full recovery. However, they divulged no further details as Kean missed over 100 floor votes since mid-March. At 57, Kean is pursuing a third term in November, a crucial midterm battle. Nevertheless, his absence left some Republican supporters feeling frustrated, as they have included even his most staunch allies.
