4 hours ago 0

Pennsylvania authorities have shared video footage from a dramatic trial where an armed man held a 2-year-old girl hostage. This incident led to an intense standoff with police. A jury has convicted Antonio Hammond on multiple charges, including kidnapping and possession of a firearm, as announced by the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office.

Details of the Standoff

The trial footage shows the initial moments of the standoff that occurred on May 30, 2023. Hammond was inside a Harrisburg home, holding the girl while police attempted to resolve the situation. The girl’s mother, Michele Peters, recorded Hammond as he held her distressed daughter. Police officers outside demanded Hammond’s surrender.

Throughout the recording, Hammond expressed paranoid beliefs, telling the mother that police were ‘trying to kill’ him and urging her to ‘trust in God.’ He repeatedly stated his affection for people and children. The mother pleaded desperately for the release of her child, stating she did not know Hammond.

Background and Capture

Before the incident, Hammond was on parole and had previous encounters with law enforcement. On the day of the standoff, officers spotted him with a firearm and tried to apprehend him. During his escape, Hammond aimed a pistol at the officers and tried to fire it, but the weapon did not discharge as there was no round in the chamber.

Hammond then entered Peters’ apartment, taking her child hostage. He commanded Peters to record him, mistakenly believing this would prevent officers from using force. Throughout the standoff, Hammond maintained possession of the child and the firearm.

Conclusion of the Standoff

Peters managed to escape with her infant, but Hammond continued to hold the toddler hostage. After nearly six hours, a Crisis Response Team entered the home. During the intervention, Hammond threatened the child’s life by pointing the gun at the child, prompting officers to act swiftly. A team member subdued Hammond, securing the child and taking Hammond into custody. Medical professionals treated Hammond on-site, preserving his life, as confirmed by authorities.
