1 day ago 0

On Monday, a tragic event unfolded in Montreal, resulting in the deaths of a police officer and a civilian. The gunman responsible was also killed during the incident, which occurred in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. This area is known for its kosher restaurants and supermarkets, frequented by Montreal’s sizable Jewish community.

The shooting took place near a supermarket, with shops and residential buildings surrounding the scene. Montreal police expressed their grief over losing one of their officers in the line of duty through a statement online. In addition to the officer and the civilian, the suspect also lost his life. The police have urged the public to avoid the area.

According to Fady Dagher, the chief of the Montreal Police Service, the incident began around 11:30 a.m. local time. Police quickly arrived at the scene, including deploying a helicopter for surveillance. Although the identity of the civilian victim remains unknown, the investigation continues to unfold.

The chief mentioned that the suspect was shot immediately but could not confirm the circumstances surrounding the civilian’s death. Another officer was seriously injured, and Dagher noted that the force is unified in their support for her recovery. He lamented the tragic loss of the fallen officer, praising his dedication and passion for his work. This marks the first loss of an officer in the line of duty for the Montreal police since 2002.

Dagher reassured the community that there was no ongoing threat. However, details about a potential 911 call used to lure officers remain unclear. Initial thoughts suggest the police were not the intended target, but the investigation will provide more clarity.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is actively monitoring the situation. They have advised community members to stay vigilant as details of the tragic incident emerge. Quebec Premier Christine Frechette expressed her shock and emphasized the importance of allowing authorities to conduct their investigation without speculation.
