New York City Mayor Mamdani Faces Political Challenge in Primaries

2 days ago 0

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing a crucial test of his political influence as candidates he endorses compete against establishment Democrats in New York’s congressional primaries. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), made history with his 2025 mayoral victory. He aims to leverage his political capital to advance progressives and socialists into congressional positions. This effort has the potential to enhance his influence and bolster the socialist faction in New York politics.

Who Is Mamdani Supporting in New York Primaries?

Mamdani has endorsed candidates challenging incumbents in New York City congressional districts. In the 10th District, he supports former City Comptroller Brad Lander against Representative Dan Goldman. In the 13th District, he backs organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier over Representative Adriano Espaillat. In the open race for the 7th District, he endorses Assemblymember Claire Valdez versus Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. Avila Chevalier and Valdez are DSA members, but Lander is not directly associated with the organization.

Valdez vs. Reynoso: New York’s 7th District

With Representative Nydia Velázquez stepping down from a Congress seat she held since 1993, New York’s 7th District presents an open race. Known as one of the most left-leaning districts, it includes Brooklyn and Queens, famously dubbed the ‘Commie Corridor.’ Valdez, first elected to the State Assembly in 2024, is a newcomer in New York politics. Reynoso, formerly a city council member since 2014, now has the endorsement of Velázquez and the Working Families Party.

An Emerson College poll reflects Valdez with 23% support compared to Reynoso’s 21%, yet 43% of voters remain undecided. Prediction markets have heavily favored Valdez, granting her an 83% winning chance. While Mamdani’s endorsement aligns strong progressive support, Velázquez criticizes it, noting possible distractions from essential political work.

Lander vs. Goldman: New York’s 10th District

Mamdani and Lander became allies after the 2025 mayoral election. With Goldman first elected in 2022, Mamdani’s early support for Lander stems from their shared progressive agenda. Emerson College polling indicates Lander leading, with 57% backing compared to Goldman’s 23%. Prediction markets also strongly favor Lander, giving him a 98% chance of victory.

The district encompasses areas of Brooklyn and Manhattan. Progressive Democrats criticize Goldman’s lack of progressive alignment and scrutiny over certain foreign policy stances. Mamdani praises Lander as a ‘trusted ally,’ strengthening their partnership.

Avila Chevalier vs. Espaillat: New York’s 13th District

Representing Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx since 2017, Espaillat faces opposition from Avila Chevalier, who argues he lacks progressive foreign policy stances. Avila Chevalier has attempted to distance herself from controversial social media posts but leads in some polls, with a 39% preference against Espaillat’s 35%. Predictions show Espaillat having slight favor with Kalshi and Polymarket.

Mamdani Clashes With Establishment

Despite Mamdani’s significant influence, New York City’s political establishment remains distant. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorses Goldman and Espaillat, while many moderate Democrats supported an independent bid from former Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2025. Democratic strategist Basil Smikle emphasizes tension between DSA and establishment members rooted in outsider-insider dynamics.

Mamdani maintains the primaries are about seeking and delivering more. His endorsed candidates represent a distinct approach to shifting the Democratic Party.

DSA Could Expand Ranks in 2026 Midterms

After frustrations with the Trump administration, DSA potentially gains power in upcoming midterms. A notable victory already achieved in Washington, D.C. with Janeese Lewis George. Further opportunities arise in Los Angeles mayoral race and Pennsylvania’s congressional seat with Chris Rabb favored for the win.
