President Donald Trump issued a warning over vandalism occurring on the National Mall. He connected the marking of “8647” in the grass to further damage noted near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The marking “8647” was found on June 11 on the National Mall lawn, prompting authorities to start examining its origin. This investigation is linked with the issues at the reflecting pool that arose soon after its renovation completion early in June. The renovation cost over $14 million, yet algae blooms and peeling blue paint appeared within days of reopening. Law enforcement officials are actively investigating these incidents and making arrests related to activities near the pool.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump emphasized that federal authorities will enforce harsh penalties for vandalism. He stated, “Of the MANY Statues and Fountains that we rebuilt, renovated, cleaned, and fixed, the only one that was Vandalized was the Reflecting Pool, which is being taken care of, ASAP!” Trump noted that the pool incurred a large gash, illegal chemicals had been placed in the water, and grass was marked with “86 47.” He attributed this to former FBI Director James Comey.
Trump reminded the public that there is a ten-year prison sentence for vandalizing federal property and assured that this law would be strictly enforced. Newsweek attempted to reach the White House for a comment.
