The leading American sports leagues embraced the federal holiday of Juneteenth on social media. Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved Black people in America. These affirmations stood in contrast to the muted recognition of Pride Month by some leagues and teams.
The NFL, the nation’s premier sports league, highlighted Juneteenth initiatives shared by some teams. The league did not acknowledge the commencement of Pride Month on its social media platforms, which reach millions of followers. This absence drew attention when compared to the NFL’s Juneteenth acknowledgment.
All but one of the NFL’s 32 teams acknowledged Juneteenth. In contrast, several teams remained silent at the onset of Pride Month. Teams such as the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys were among those that did not celebrate Pride Month this year, continuing their stance from previous years. The Detroit Lions uniquely did not acknowledge Juneteenth, despite actively supporting other social justice causes, like Pride Month.
The NHL did not mention Juneteenth on its social media accounts. This oversight was particularly noted as the NHL had publicly supported Pride Month. The NBA and MLB joined the NFL in recognizing Juneteenth. Additionally, the Texas Rangers celebrated Juneteenth, although they remain the only MLB team not to host a dedicated Pride Month event.
The varied responses from sports leagues underscore a societal divide over social justice issues. Fans increasingly value the stances their sports teams take on these matters. Teams now often explore causes beyond sports, taking public positions through their chosen celebrations and omissions.
Juneteenth celebrates a pivotal moment in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger informed enslaved Texans of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation. President Abraham Lincoln had signed this proclamation two years earlier, but it was not until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in December 1865 that enslaved people were freed throughout the country.
In 2021, President Joe Biden established Juneteenth as a national holiday. The NHL, along with the Detroit Lions, missed recognizing the holiday’s significance through official channels.
