Despite these calls, Starmer remains at the G7 summit, where he welcomed Switzerland’s Federal President Guy Parmelin, seeking to focus on broader strategic issues.

The political threat he faces grew on Friday, after Burnham’s successful parliamentary victory. This positions Burnham to challenge Starmer’s leadership formally. Since taking the helm of the Labour Party in 2020, Starmer became prime minister in 2024. But calls for his resignation have surged recently, driven by over 100 Labour lawmakers demanding he step down or outline his departure timeline. The internal party dissatisfaction accelerated following poor local election results, where Labour lost multiple council seats and longstanding strongholds.
