Vandalism at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Sparks Arrests

4 days ago 0

The United States Park Police have arrested several individuals in connection with alleged vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This follows days after algae turned the water a bright green and issues emerged with the pool’s new surface.

President Trump shared on a social media post that multiple arrests have been made related to the vandalism. He labeled these actions as severe crimes against national monuments, stating that those responsible would face significant jail time. Immediate efforts to repair the damage have been promised.

The National Park Service has not yet issued a comment on the situation.

David Hearn, a 67-year-old man from Bethesda, Maryland, reported being detained for five hours after examining the Reflecting Pool. Hearn, a former Olympic canoe racer, stated his interest was purely scientific. He noted that the new pool coating felt rubbery and briefly touched it before being instructed to stop by a park worker. Subsequently, he was detained by National Guard troops and Park Police. Hearn now faces a court date and seeks legal representation.

President Trump claimed, without evidence, that vandals destroyed grass near the pool and damaged its interior. These claims come as the Reflecting Pool, recently refurbished, continues to face issues. Problems include leaks, algae, and faulty plumbing. Repair efforts had been initiated as part of a wider clean-up in Washington, D.C.

Despite resurfacing and refilling the pool, problems like algae were evident. Workers have been seen removing the algae, and hydrogen peroxide has been added to treat the water. President Trump assured that the algae problem is mostly resolved and repairs to the vandalism are scheduled for completion soon.

Concerns over mysterious chemicals used in the pool have also been voiced by Trump, drawing comparisons to similar issues on the National Mall. This refers to previous findings of discolored grass etched with ’86 47′, thought to potentially threaten the president. Authorities continue to investigate this matter.
