Former Heisman-winning quarterback and NFL star Robert Griffin III was involved in a flight incident that required an emergency landing on Friday. The news emerged through a video he posted on social media. The 36-year-old detailed his experience aboard a United flight departing from Houston, noting that the right engine “caught fire” soon after takeoff.
The video shows the plane back at the terminal. Griffin described the alarming moment saying, “We heard 15 straight loud bangs and immediately knew something was wrong.” Fortunately, the pilots managed to land safely, ensuring the safety of all passengers without injuries. Grateful for the outcome, Griffin noted, “God is good.” A video document accompanying the post revealed the plane’s wing catching fire during takeoff at the Houston airport.
“We heard 15 straight loud bangs and immediately knew something was wrong,” he said. “Thankfully the pilots were able to get us and every passenger back safe and sound with zero injuries.”
Griffin, who was an NFL standout during his rookie season, expressed his apprehension about flying. Reflecting on the incident, he shared his distaste for airplane travel, emphasizing the discomfort and stress of flying, such as delays and cramped spaces. Despite these hesitations, he was relieved to be safe.
Griffin’s football journey is notable. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2011 and was drafted second overall by the Washington Redskins. His debut season was impressive, earning him a Pro Bowl selection and leading Washington to an NFC East title. Unfortunately, his career faced setbacks after an ACL and LCL injury during a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks.
His career included stints with Washington, Cleveland, and Baltimore. Griffin retired after the 2020 season and transitioned to a career in sports analysis, first with ESPN and now as part of FOX Sports’ college football team.
United Airlines released a statement confirming the incident. “United flight 102 from Houston to Munich returned to George Bush Intercontinental Airport due to an engine issue. The flight landed safely, and customers deplaned normally. We are arranging for another aircraft to take customers to their destination.”
